Job Description

Signing Exact English (S.E.E.) Interpreter/Paraeducator

(for the 2025-26 school year)

Northwest School for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children (NWSDHH) is seeking Signing Exact English (S.E.E.) Interpreters/Paraeducators for our preschool – eighth grade classrooms. We have both substitute and full-time positions available. Our S.E.E. Interpreters/Paraeducators use Signing Exact English (S.E.E.) in our classrooms. If you don’t know S.E.E. but use another form of signing and are willing to learn S.E.E., we like to meet you!

Located in Shoreline (north Seattle), our school community is a fantastic place to work for those seeking a caring, mutually-supportive workplace that is dedicated to best practices in Deaf Education. Our day school serves children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (D/HH), preschool through 8th grade, and live within a 2-hour radius of our campus. Students are taught by a Teacher of the Deaf (TOD), and students may be mainstreamed in their neighborhood school, as directed by their IEP. Students are supported in becoming self-confident, articulate, academically-competitive learners and community members who demonstrate that hearing loss is a difference, not a disability. Students wear amplification, are provided with DM/FM systems, and use simultaneous speech and S.E.E. to develop age-appropriate English and literacy. Class sizes are small, typically with 5 – 8 students in a homeroom grouping, served by a TOD and an interpreter/paraeducator.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Support TOD in all classroom activities including but not limited to: interpreting classroom instruction; carry out classroom routines and transitions, as well as individualized, instructional goals; manage and check of assistive listening devices; facilitate speech, English, and social interactions with peers during class time, recess, and lunchtime; help with student behavior and organizational management; assist with record-keeping and data collection of requested skill and behaviors; prepare materials; interpret; transport students to and from mainstreaming opportunities as needed; and attend staff and other educational meetings.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Openness and desire to learn and be trained on tasks and responsibilities that may be new to you
  • Associates Degree or higher education and at least one year of experience in an educational setting or equivalent
  • Documentation of EIPA scores of at least 3.5, or ESSE score of at last 4.0 or equivalent testing Interpreter Training Program; and/or S.E.E. proficiency or willingness to enroll in intermediate level S.E.E. classes offered at the school and participate in the EIPA training program provided by the school
  • Knowledge and demonstrated adherence to interpreter code of ethics and confidentiality requirements (FERPA and NWSDHH policy)
  • Ability to work well with colleagues, other professionals, and parents/guardians
  • A passion for working with children
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent time management and commitment to punctuality
  • Flexibility in service of addressing student needs and job requirements
  • Ability to stay organized and multi-task while attending to detail
  • Familiarity with current personal amplification, assistive listening devices, and ROGER personal and Soundfield systems, or willingness to learn
  • Driver’s license and willingness to drive children to and from mainstreaming assignments and field trips
  • Background check (including fingerprinting)
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds

BENEFITS:

  • Generous PTO
  • Health, Dental, Vision
  • 403b plan with company matching
  • Short-term/Long-term disability

SALARY: $33.25 to $44.35 an hour, based on years of experience and EIPA certification status.

FOR MORE INFORMATION: Please submit a resume and cover letter to Head of School, Kabian Rendel.
