Job Description

Summary

The Production Technician works closely with pharmacists to ensure the safe and efficient preparation of compounded medications in both sterile and non-sterile environments. Technicians will be expected to perform tasks in both areas but may become specialized in certain functions at the direction of the Production Supervisor. This role involves accurately compounding prescriptions, maintaining compliance with applicable regulations, and ensuring quality control in a 503A compounding pharmacy. The technician supports pharmacy operations by handling prescription fulfillment, maintaining laboratory cleanliness, and ensuring adherence to safety protocols.

Responsibilities

Pharmacy Compliance

  • Adheres to all state and federal regulations, as well as internal policies and procedures, including HIPAA.
  • Ensures compliance with USP <795> , <797> , and <800> guidelines through initial and ongoing training.
  • Participates in quality control and maintains proper documentation for all compounding activities.
  • Follows safety protocols including proper use of PPE and aseptic technique.
  • Maintains a clean, organized work environment per established cleaning schedules.

Prescription Fulfillment

  • Accurately reads, interprets, and enters prescription orders into the system.
  • Prepares and compounds medications per established formulations under pharmacist supervision.
  • Completes and maintains accurate formula logs and documentation.
  • Measures, mixes, packages, and labels compounded medications with precision.
  • Works with pharmacists to manage inventory of active ingredients and batch products.
  • Ensures proper handling of hazardous/non-hazardous drugs per OSHA standards.
  • Reports errors, discrepancies, or insanitary conditions to the production supervisor.

Process Administration & Inventory Control

  • Maintains inventory of ingredients, supplies, and PPE.
  • Assists in batch compounding, labeling, and documentation review.
  • Ensures timely preparation and shipping or pickup of compounded prescriptions.
  • Maintains detailed records and engages in continuous learning on compounding practices.

  • Mon – Fri, 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM
  • Mon – Fri, 10:00 AM – 6:30 PM
  • Mon- Fri, 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM
  • Mon- Fri, 11:00 PM – 7:30 AM

Technical Requirements

  • Satisfactory completion of internal aseptic technique validation and testing.
  • Maintenance of CE credits to uphold CPhT certification.
  • Completion of a minimum 40-hour ACPE-accredited course covering:
  • Aseptic technique
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Sterile prep calculations and terminology
  • Documentation
  • PPE usage, gowning/gloving techniques
  • Hazardous drug handling and cleanroom conduct
  • Completion of structured on-the-job didactic and experiential training related to sterile compounding.
  • At least 4 hours of ACPE-accredited continuing education in relevant topics every two years.
  • Training and hands-on experience with sterile equipment, gowning, gloving, and environmental testing.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with aseptic lab protocols and participate in inventory control.
  • Ability to create and manage compounding logs (verified by pharmacists).
  • Familiarity with pharmacy compounding software (e.g., The Compounder) and basic office equipment (copier, fax, phone).

Education

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Required)
